The LEVERTON
family of Lincolnshire originates from LEVERTON
village and parish near Boston.
This is my least researched tree due to the
fact that all other trees originated well within the county boundaries of
Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire
and
Devon/Cornwall. These are the counties in which I have done most of my
research. This family is from the border area of Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire
and Norfolk.
Originally this tree was researched in
Lincolnshire as LEVERTON. All used this
spelling back to and including the children of John LEVINTON who
married Ann
SPONGE at Lincoln in 1806. According to the 1851 census John was born in
Norfolk and as I have not researched in this county, John remained
the earliest
person in this tree for many years.
Recently, with the help of other people and the Internet, I have found
John’s baptism in Norfolk, and
his parent’s
marriage in Cambridgeshire, as LEVERINGTON.
This raises questions as to whether this is
a LEVERTON or LEVERINGTON family. LEVERINGTON is a name from Norfolk and
Cambridgeshire whereas LEVERTON
is from
Lincolnshire. This makes 2 possibilities
for this family. Either:
They are a true LEVERINGTON family whose
name was spelt LEVERTON upon moving to Lincolnshire, in which case they are not
LEVERTONS at all.
Or:
They are a LEVERTON family from
Lincolnshire, probably from the family at Long Sutton, which moved into Norfolk
and Cambridgeshire (Tree
L0), in which
case there is
probably a relationship to (Tree
L1). More research is needed.
I am more inclined to go with the second
option as a family from both this tree and tree L1 lived in the same road in
the village of Low Toynton in
the 1851
census. (coincidence?)
